Rooftop solar array saves Lyreco over £50,000 in first year

One of the largest rooftop solar arrays in the UK has delivered savings of over £50,000 in its first year after generating more than 3GWh of clean electricity at a large distribution centre in Shropshire.

According to installer EvoEnergy, the 3.8MW system atop Lyreco’s National Distribution Centre in Telford performed well against expectations to power on-site operations.

As a result, Lyreco has been able to cut its annual carbon emissions by 1,576 tonnes - making the 15-acre site carbon neutral in terms of electricity usage.

Peter Alder, head of sales and marketing at EvoEnergy, said: “Lyreco approached us because they wanted to offset the environmental impact of their distribution centre and delivery vehicles, which saw us install our biggest array to date on a rooftop the size of 7.5 football pitches.

“It’s great to see that Lyreco have – and will continue to – benefit from reduced CO2 emissions and energy bills over the last 12 months.”

The system is owned and operated through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) by Addison Energy, a company funded by Guinness Asset Management’s EIS service.

PPAs have proved to be a popular option for companies seeking to lower their energy bills while cutting emissions from their operations.

Belfast Airport recently revealed it had saved more than £100,000 in the first ten months of operation of its 4.84MW dedicated solar farm, which will also save an estimated 2,100 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
